2016 Wrap – Breakthrough Artist

Each and every year, new artists creating innovative and interesting music emerge. The Breakthrough Artist is a section is where CBB’s editorial team (Gemma, Angela, Rochelle) handpick a couple of artists who’ve really stepped up to the plate, and celebrate the year they’ve had.

Gemma

Alexander Biggs

I’m not sure how anyone could go past the impressive mark Alexander has made this year, and only having released two singles there is so much more to come for this guy. Biggs’ songwriting projects an emotion and fragility few can emulate, and his demeanour on stage is simply charming in an excellently awkward way. Definitely looking forward to what he has to offer in 2017.

Angela

Julia Jacklin

At the start of 2016, few people had heard of Julia Jacklin. But as they say, “nek minut”. A string of luxuriant singles got the snowball going, with her debut album smashing her beautiful voice into minds across the country. See the top five albums for my complete feelings on that. To top it all off, her diligent touring schedule has seen her grow into a confident, mesmerizing performer. This year, Australia, next year I predict *sweeps hand across surroundings* the world.

Rochelle

Alex Lahey

Former front woman of Animaux, Alex Lahey launched her solo endeavour last year – and it’s been pretty bloody inspiring to see where she’s taken it. An unfiltered and relatable songwriter, Lahey has crafted a legion of fans who appreciate her honesty and revel in the journey of a 20-something experiencing relationships, study, work and everything in between.

2016 has been nothing short of epic for AL. She opened Splendour In The Grass, has played plenty of ripper shows since and released EP B Grade University. It’s also just been announced that she’s currently working on her debut album and is setting off on a European tour with Tegan and Sara in early 2017.

Superstar in the making. Amirite?
