A local always knows best. Which is why we’ve asked Sean Caskey of Brisbane band Last Dinosaurs to take us through some of the most influential artists that hail from their hometown.
The Apartments – The Shyest Time
I was deeply in to this sound when I started playing in bands at the end of high school. This song just sort of hit the spot for me, it’s a start of the day kind of song.
The Go-Betweens – Streets of your town
This is the song that Brisbane is most proud of. We used it for a council ad campaign and named a bridge after the band.
The Saints – (I’m) Stranded
Arguably one of the most influential bands to come from Australia, and they came at such a critical time for contemporary music. I chose this purely for the sake that it deserves a mention. I don’t particularly listen to The Saints but i’m sure a lot of my influences would have taken something from them.
The Riptides – 77 Sunset Strip
Another song I came across when i started getting in to playing music. Possibly one of the reasons why Last Dinos were ‘surf rock’ at the beginning of the cretaceous period.
REGURGITATOR – Black Bugs
A classic song, brings me back to primary school days. Sitting under the big tree at lunch time mainly singing ‘fat cop’.
THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS – Rainbow Kraut
Such an awesome song which really stood out (and still does) from the rest of the Bris band scene.
VIOLENT SOHO – Jesus Stole My Girlfriend
I remember when this was on the radio a lot and it always mystified me why these guys weren’t huge! But now they are absolutely killing it which is awesome to see. This song always gives me goosebumps.
GUNG HO – Strangers
This song still really inspires me, I honestly think it’s such an underrated pop song. The chorus hits that nail on the head which i have been trying to hit for years.
