Jesse Davidson has been quickly gaining recognition across Australia this year, and for a good reason. Having played Laneway Festival and Groovin the Moo earlier in the year, he then jetted off to the UK to play The Great Escape emerging artists festival, showcasing his low-key electronic style. ‘Lagoon’ is the second single from upcoming EP Lizard Boy, and its dreamy sound will whisk you away into Davidson’s world.
The song starts out with a solo synth line, creating an interesting, almost videogame-like vibe. A basic drumbeat soon enters, along with Davidson’s wistful vocals. There’s a slight Grizzly Bear feel to Davidson’s voice and lyrics, with lines such as “late at night/I know you’re trying to change” reminiscent of the Brooklyn band. According to Davidson, “the song is about growing up and changing,” and this definitely comes across through his lyrics. A steadily climbing guitar backing helps to lead up to the chorus, where Davidson becomes more passionate, before stripping the song back to a series of synth chords. It’s hard not to be entranced by the minimal electronic symphony Davidson has created here – it’s simple but it works. Overall, ‘Lagoon’ is a great taste of what’s to come from Davidson and it’s likely that 2016 will be an even bigger year for him.
